Achieving Equity and Excellence in Public Education

Terry-Lee Beaudry

Presented by: School District 23 Assistant Superintendent Terry Lee Beaudry

Tuesday, April 27th 2010 at 5:00PM

Ballroom of the University Centre Building at UBCO

The issues related to "equity and excellence" in education are complex, challenging and critical.  Conversations about equity in our classrooms and schools require an understanding of both an historical perspective and an appreciation of current conditions.  We can celebrate how far we have come in closing the achievement gap; however, we need to embrace new structures and strategies to support the needs of ALL learners.  Dufour refers to this call to action as doing "Whatever it Takes"  to ensure all students reach their potential.  Guiding transformational change is the ultimate test of a leader.  In this brief presentation, Terry will challenge participants to rethink the meaning of equity in order to achieve excellence.  Research on diversity awareness and oral story telling will be highlighted in the presentation.
